A big CONGRATULATIONS to Janiel Bodiford and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bentley, for earning their AKC MACH title on Sunday at the DFWESSA trial!!!

This team has come such a very long way from when they first started training at PAWS a few years ago. I confess I’ve pushed Janiel pretty hard to get out of her comfort zone with her dogs. She resisted doing lead-out pivots, rear crossing the weaves, leaving her dogs to get into position for a front cross. In short, she wanted to micro-manage her dogs like we all do, especially with our first agility dogs. I’ve challenged Janiel to trust her dogs and try new things. What she found is that her dogs got faster, and Bentley started getting more MACH points per run than Janiel ever imagined he was capable of. And, so, with Sunday’s two beautiful runs, Bentley finished his MACH, a title that requires 20 Double Q’s and 750 speed points.

Congratulations again to a great team! Way to go, Janiel & Bentley!!!

In addition to Janiel’s big accomplishment this past weekend, PAWSters traveled to different areas for different agility venues and came home with some nice results!

Several of us PAWSters converged on Calera on Saturday, September 24th, for one of their NADAC fun-raisers. These are actual trials, but the atmosphere is very laid back, so it’s a great way for those new to agility (or training new dogs) to get started trialing without all the stress that so often goes along with it.

Some benefits about this particular venue:

- Only one ring that’s enclosed on three sides and curtained on the entry/exit side.

- Only one dog off-leash in the ring at a time. When one dog finishes a run, the dog waiting its turn is not unleashed until the dog that just finished running has its leash back on.

- Some training in the ring is allowed, so this was a perfect time to work on start-line stays, contacts, weaves, distractions.

As for me, I went for two reasons: (1) to work on Braedan’s start-lines and contacts, and (2) to encourage some of our newbies to go and be there to support them.

Special kudos to:

Dave Fulenwider & Toby (Dachshund). Toby is the first dog Dave has trained, and this was Dave’s first trial. While Toby was somewhat distracted by all the new smells in this arena, Dave did an exceptional job of maintaining his composure and running Toby just like he does in class.

Janet Johnson & Gus (Pit Bull). Despite my promises that this would be a very comfortable venue for Gus’s first trial, Janet was a nervous wreck. Gus was also a bit distracted by the new place and its myriad of smells, but Janet held it together and never gave up on Gus. I was proud of her great handling. Janet admits she had fun and wants to go again J. She had this to say: “Even though my dog peed in the tunnel during one run and ran out of the ring on two runs, we still had loads of fun. Everyone was so nice, positive and encouraging. I felt like we were still welcome despite the multiple faux pas.”

Gayle Fox & Chunkers (Pomeranian). Gayle has been working hard on Chunk’s start-line stays and “Go’s!”, and she worked them nicely at this trial. Chunk, too, had to check out the smells (and the judge and ring crew , but she continues to improve her focus with every outing.

Comments from other PAWSters about this venue:

- It was a great place to take a novice dog for a trial. The relaxed setting and all the encouragement from everyone was a great plus, too.

- Like a fun match but with a judge, Q’s, and ribbons. You can train some in the ring, too, which was great.

- What I liked the most was the positive attitude of the NADAC ‘regulars’ and judges. And, as always, the support & encouragement from fellow PAWSters!

- It was especially good for people who had not been in trials before. It boosted my confidence to be able to go through all the steps of running my dog: getting ready, getting the dog in position, leash/collar off and then running his dog and exiting the course correctly. Excellent practice – not so many people, so less overwhelming for an inexperienced dog.

What a great turnout we had last night!!! Lots of PAWSters *and* lots of non-PAWS folks. It was a long night – started running dogs a little after 7:00 p.m. and didn’t finish up until Midnight – but we got lots of nice compliments and requests to have another one soon.

As always, PAWSters chipped in to help wherever they were needed, and that’s always much appreciated. I want to especially thank a few people who went above and beyond:

- Janie Fowler. . .who’s brand new to agility and PAWS (just out of beginners), got here early to take money and sign folks in, and brought a cooler of bottled water for folks to enjoy!

- Peggy Friauf. . .PAWS instructor who also arrived early and did all the timing and gate stewarding for the Standard ring – from start to finish! I’m not sure she even got a potty break! (What’s worse is she had to get up and go to work this morning!)

- Gratia Childers. . .PAWSter who came out just to help and ended up spending the entire evening working in the Standard ring helping reset knocked bars, changing jump heights, and pushing the table back in place after the bigger dogs would cause it to slide across the grass.

These three ladies came out to work and didn’t even run a dog during the evening. Talk about some great PAWS support!

Other PAWSters whose help was also very much appreciated:

- Samantha Ferrie. . .who timed all the small dogs in the Jumpers ring and helped reset knocked bars, too.

- Jessica & Justine White. . .helped reset the chute and jump bars in the Standard ring while the little dogs were running.

- Brandy Ferrera, Victoria Severns, Kat Nicholl-Basye, Steffany Jay, and Anne Miller for helping wherever needed and whenever asked.

- Kathleen Coleman & Dave Fulenwider. . .who brought an extra canopy to put over the sign-in desk (which was a great help because ours got demolished in yesterday afternoon’s wind).

I also want to acknowledge some of our very new PAWSters and/or PAWS dogs (the first three listed below just graduated from beginners agility last Monday) and were brave enough to come out and play last night:

- Cheryl Mobley & Indigo (Cattle Dog)

- Shellaine Conant & Sketch (All-American)

- Marlene Bean & Oliver (Yorkshire Terrier)

- Kat Nicholl-Basye & Zen (Border Collie)

- Genine Kelly & Eli (All-American)

- Mary Taylor & Rio (All-American)

- Steffany Jay & Cash (Aussie)

I’m sure I’ve forgotten someone along the way, but please know that, if you helped, you were very much appreciated by not only me but everyone who attended.

As I always say. . .PAWSters are the greatest!!!

Thanks again everyone!

Fall is coming, and so are the next sessions of classes at PAWS.

Two Clicker Obedience Classes will start the second week of September. Our evening class will start on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m. (with a second class at 8:30 p.m. if the early class fills); our daytime class will begin on Wednesday, September 14th at 8:30 a.m. (with a second class at 10:00 a.m. if the first one fills).

If you’ve already taken a PAWS Clicker Obedience Class and your dog is at least a year old, you’re ready to start agility. Two Beginners Agility Classes will also be starting in September: an evening class on Monday, September 12th, at 6:45 p.m and a daytime class on Wednesday, September 14th, at 9:30 a.m. These two classes are almost filled, so send in your registration form and class fees right away to reserve a spot.

A Puppy Agility/Socialization Class is also scheduled to start on Thursday, September 15th, at 8:30 p.m. This class is a great way to allow your pup to socialize with other pups, as well as to develop his confidence as he starts his obedience and agility training.

I convinced several (11 to be exact) PAWSters to get in the agility ring with their novice dogs for the first time at an ASCA trial in Fort Worth. We had a great time, and I was extremely proud of how well everyone did. As we walked our third run of the day, we discussed the best way to handle the opening which was two jumps on an arc and then to the dogwalk. Handlers could rear cross the dogwalk or lead out slightly and front cross at the dogwalk. Because I was working start-line stays with my youngster, Braedan, I opted to do a lead-out pivot all the way to the dogwalk. Surprisingly, four other PAWSters decided they were going to do the same thing. They all did a great job; in fact, I was so impressed that I put together a short video of the lead-out pivots to share.
